As\u00a0more people than ever embrace remote work, our next challenge is mastering\u00a0the art of working from home\u2026with kids.\u00a0Here are\u00a0some tips and tricks to keep your little ones entertained and you productive while working remotely.<\/p>\n\n

1) Answer the why first<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n

Depending on how old your kids are, they may or may not fully understand why they\u2019re home from school or why you\u2019re at home (but still working). Take the time to\u00a0set some rules\u00a0and expectations\u00a0on what normal\u00a0looks like\u00a0now.\u00a0Be clear on when it\u2019s ok to make noise\u2014or not\u2014or when you\u2019ll be available to sit and do activities with them,\u00a0what situations mean it\u2019s ok to knock on the door and\u00a0when you need to be quiet in the house.<\/p>\n\n

For example, telling them that you\u2019re working from 9-12 and 1-5 lets them know that you are going to be busy throughout the day during those times, but they can expect to see you for lunch. For older children, setting simple rules like \u2018a closed door means you need it to be quiet during calls\u2019 could be all it takes to keep your sanity throughout the day. Many of our coworkers set a policy that the kids need to send a message online or open the door quietly to get your attention if the door is closed.<\/p>\n\n

2) Set a schedule<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n

Keeping a routine is hard\u00a0in\u00a0this new\u00a0normal, but\u00a0a necessity for some kids. We\u2019ve found that taking\u00a0some time to plan out a schedule\u00a0so they get used to waking up, doing planned activities, studying, and going on walks really helps keep things as normal as possible.<\/p>\n\n

Another option is to let the kids set their schedules and timers using connected devices. For example, they can tell\u00a0in-home smart devices\u00a0to set a timer\u00a0(or use the kitchen timer)\u00a0throughout the day to keep them on track.<\/p>\n\n

3) Work as a team<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n

With so many companies encouraging or mandating remote work, you may be lucky enough to be working at home with your\u00a0partner or have friends or family able to help. If so, plan who will have some downtime to entertain the kids and when you can switch off.<\/p>\n\n

If you have a big meeting that requires no distractions or\u00a0unnecessary noise, consider\u00a0arranging an activity for\u00a0the kids\u00a0to go\u00a0outside to play\u00a0(if available).\u00a0Other activities like\u00a0board games\u00a0or specific\u00a0school assignments can\u00a0leave you some quiet time to\u00a0focus.\u00a0Big siblings (depending on their age) can also be enlisted to help with the younger kids throughout the day.\u00a0Click to find other great ways that technology creates better interpersonal connections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

4) Talk with your manager about flexibility<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n

With so many of us working remotely, most leaders are anticipating and accepting the challenges of working remotely, including dealing with distractions. If your kids are up early and don\u2019t nap until the afternoon, work with your manager to schedule essential calls around that time. Or ask for non-traditional working hours so you can maximize your time when your children are sleeping at night.<\/p>\n\n

You can also explain that they\u2019ll be running in and out\u00a0of the room throughout the day and to not be surprised when one of them\u00a0makes a cameo\u00a0on\u00a0a video call.\u00a0You may be surprised with how many of your coworkers are in the same situation and open up conversations you would never have had in the office!\u00a0At\u00a0Webex, we\u00a0welcome kids or pets as part of the work from home experience! 5) Never stop learning<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n

Whether you\u00a0regularly\u00a0homeschool,\u00a0your child\u2019s teacher has sent home digital or physical schoolwork, or you just want your kids to keep learning while home,\u00a0there are a few ways to engage your kids in learning.\u00a0Set times throughout the day for reading, completing assignments, doing puzzles or other activities that challenge their mind, or any other learning-related activities they can\u00a0do.\u00a0If you have a tablet or computer, set aside time for your kids to play a fun educational game\u2014they\u2019ll be learning, but really, it\u2019ll feel like fun (and keep them occupied).<\/p>\n\n

6) Keep them busy<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n
