Space: the final frontier. These words bring a sense of joy and wonder to anyone who hears them. Who hasn’t looked up at the stars and dreamed of traveling to the Moon or a distant planet in our galaxy? Only a select few individuals have ever traveled to space and even fewer have lived there. And the idea of leaving Earth and planting a colony on the Moon or Mars? Only in the movies!
Now, what was once a dream, could very well become reality. As part of NASA’s Artemis program, humans are planning to go back to the Moon, build a basecamp, and someday, travel to Mars. Once only the purview of science fiction, space travel is back.
And Webex will be there. Callisto is a Lockheed Martin technology demonstration payload flying onboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft and its Artemis I mission early this year. Built in collaboration with Lockheed Martin and Amazon, Callisto uses a state-of-the-art, purpose-built version of Webex to help test collaboration technologies that could be used in future Artemis missions for deep space exploration.
Having our technology be part of this mission? Amazing. Knowing the possibilities of the connections Webex can enable, even across the vastness of space? Awe-inspiring… and humbling.
In the future, with Webex, space explorers could stay connected via HD video to Mission Control, basecamp, and even their loved ones at home – and co-create and collaborate on Webex devices. Webex has always bridged the divide of hybrid work, facilitating work to happen whether you are at home, in the office, or somewhere in between – and someday, we’ll add deep space to that list!

At Cisco, our purpose is to power an inclusive future for all and ignite human potential wherever it might be. We are thrilled to be part of a mission whose objective is to land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon. The future of space and human connections will be based on inclusivity. With Webex, the barriers that keep us apart are lowered even more allowing space explorers to participate equally, from anywhere.
We believe more can be achieved when diverse ideas and workstyles come together, and everyone can contribute equally, fully, and as their best selves. We’re proud to play a part in helping move space travel forward with technologies we’ve come to rely on here on Earth, and in some way, pushing to the final frontier and beyond.
