6 winning strategies for a video conference interview

May 14, 2018 — Jason Quesada

Congrats! Whether you’re a future employee preparing to interview with your dream company or an employer who may have found the perfect candidate for a position, you’ve taken a step forward in the interview process. And quite possibly, one toward your next video conference interview.

In the race to secure top-talent – and the quest to land the ideal gig, regardless of location – video conferencing has emerged as a connective bridge. Ideal, a company of specialists using artificial intelligence for task automation, found that about 63 percent of organizations use video interviews during their recruitment process. And with two-way video interviews saving as much as 67 percent on necessary travel costs when compared to more conventional recruitment techniques, it’s no wonder video conferencing’s popularity has grown.

Video conferencing has transformed the interview process for both candidates and employers. Whichever side of the camera you’re on, use these tips to take interview convos from “hello” to “hired.”

  1. Check your tech

You don’t want to be surprised by any technical glitches that could derail the interview process. So prior to a scheduled meeting, check and double-check that your audio, video and internet connections are good to go. Better yet….

  1. Do a test run

A “mock” interview can help ease any jitters you may have, so tag a friend to help you test question responses, get the hang of your video interview platform and speaking to a camera instead of your computer screen.

  1. Set the atmosphere

A well-lit room, neutral background and a quiet place where both the interviewer and the interviewee can hear one another and provides the professional setting needed for an interview.

  1. Dress to impress

How you dress can affect your body language and your mind set. Because of this, it’s best to dress as if you are welcoming a candidate into your office or meeting an interviewer in person.  So skip the pajama bottoms or fuzzy slippers, even if no one can see them but you.

  1. Remove distractions

Would you reply to a text message in the middle of an interview? How about taking a quick call from your spouse? Interruptions like these not only stall interview flow, but they’re also just plain unprofessional. Avoid distractions like these by communicating to others that a video conference interview is the same as an in-person interview and to not interrupt you.

  1. Relax!

It can be challenging (and even a bit intimidating) to take part in a videoconference interview. Whether you’re representing your company or representing yourself, a lot is on the line. But take a moment to breathe and focus!

You’ve made it this far and now is the time to showcase what makes your company an amazing place to work or what separates you from the pack of other candidates.
