Cisco optimizes inclusive collaboration by supporting Webex on Linux

Webex on Linux
Throughout my career, from my first job in retail to working for global organizations, there is one question that I frequently find myself debating – ‘is the customer always right?’ So, when I joined Cisco, I was amazed to learn their take on this motto. What I found most interesting was the power that Cisco places in their customer’s voices. They embrace their customer’s opinion and channels them to influence future innovation and to power an inclusive collaboration experience for all. Cisco believes that a key step to creating inclusivity starts with the most basic element: making sure all participants are part of the conversation. To achieve this, our product team created the User Community Feedback Portal – a place for our users to come together and submit ideas and feedback.

Webex Community members bring Linux support for Webex to life
A big surprise to our product team was one submission that seemed to impact only a small number of users, supporting Webex on Linux. That is until the submission gained extreme momentum, with nearly 1,600 user votes, and showcased just how valuable this update would be to our community members.
That’s why it comes as no surprise that this spring, Cisco will started supporting Webex on Linux. Now Linux users will have access to the Webex app experience and not just browser access. In this first phase, we are focusing on releasing the core workflows first – calling, messaging, and meeting, with our end goal to get to feature parity with the Windows and Mac platforms in subsequent releases.

I really like the native Linux client, because it is a real improvement over the web experience. No fancy features (yet), but better video quality, gallery view, better chat/meetings integration, faster start-up, and better reliability. Please keep up with the improvements!

I’ve tried in the past months the Linux app and it’s definitely a very welcome step in the right direction for me and a lot of other people: especially in the Universities Linux is a very common OS. From my experience I can tell you that the app works well, it seems a tad lighter on RAM/CPU/network compared to the browser and generally speaking video and voip streams are good; the integration with the Webex app is for sure very useful.
