Screen Sharing and the Creative Process
The creative process usually begins with a brainstorming session: lots of people pulled into a meeting, blue sky thinking, ideas flying back and forth and building on each other and all of it being captured on a whiteboard. Then the group disperses and we’re left to develop our individual contributions—in my case, copy. I go back to my cave and begin to create. After I generate a series of options and narrow those down to a handful of the strongest ones, I present those to my team leader. We set up a meeting and I screen share — and this is where the rubber really meets the road.
When I screen share my work with my team leader we begin editing and enter a new round of brainstorming—this one much more focused and precise. Screen sharing with WebEx lets us see the same thing and work on it together at the same time, so we can review my work and begin to make changes in real time. I’ll bring up the document and we’ll walk through the work. She’ll make suggestions for changes that I can make as we go along—and we both see the updates being made. When we come to a piece that needs to be reworked, we can talk through options together, I can type them up for both of us to see, we can discuss them as they appear in the work and then decide which to keep. We’re able to refine our work and ready it for the next round of review.
And as remote workers, screen sharing is a very important tool. It’s how we see each other’s work to brainstorm, review, edit, and contribute. Screen sharing is one way we work together when we’re in different locations.
Screen sharing coupled with video conferencing is perhaps the most powerful pairing. You can see and hear the person you’re working with as well as seeing what you’re working on together. Check out my post, Video Conferencing Changes the Way We Meet for more ways video conferencing impacts the creative process.
