Richard Barnes

Chief Security Architect for Collaboration Cisco

Richard Barnes is a Distinguished Engineer in the Security and Collaboration CTO’s office. In this role, he works with the Cisco collaboration and security businesses to help them build products that enable people work together more securely.

Prior to joining Cisco, Richard was Firefox Security Lead at Mozilla, responsible for making the web safe for hundreds of millions of users, including building a robust governance system for the Web PKI and kick-starting the WebAuthentication ecosystem. Richard was also a co-founder of the Internet Security Research Group, home of the Let’s Encrypt Certificate Authority, which powers more than half of all secure websites today. Richard continues to serve on ISRG’s board of directors.

Richard holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from the University of Virginia. Away from the keyboard, Richard is an avid runner and hiker, and enjoys working with his hands in the kitchen.
